Section 12 - Thriller Analysis

Codes and Conventions

The Transformed City - The ordinary garage we used became a lot more sinister thanks to the props such as the bloody knife and the bloody map with people's pictures all over it.

The Question and Answer model - We did this by leaving it on a cliffhanger. This makes the audience ask questions, like "What's going to happen next?" Including props such as the pictures gives us a clearer view of objective, and also makes the audience ask "What did she do to those people.

Concealment and Protraction - We did this by dressing the antagonist, trying to disguise her gender. By concealing this from the audience, it gives a greater sense of mystery and suspense.

Sound

Piano tune from a Silent Hill Youtube video. Plays throughout, natural sound inaudible.

Camerawork

Over shoulder shot at 1:13, we did this to try and highlight what the antagonist could see through her eyes rather than just see the area around her. We used zoom, as is apparent.

Worm Eye Shot at 0:12. We did this to give the killer a sense of enormity within the scene.

Extreme close up at 0:43. We did this to highlight the details of the eyes, and what they were doing. This was also good to see the mask prop.

Close Up at 0:56. This was done so you could see the pictures of the wall in a lot greater detail.

Mise En Scene

Antagonist dressed in a heavy theater cloak, and theater mask with red ribbions tied on the side, also wearing steel toe cap boots. We tried to hide the feminine aspects of the actor as best we could, this included tying up her hair, and leaving the costume loose so it did not hug the skin.

Map of greater Manchester with pictures of Mike's friend sellotaped to it. We painted on this with Games Workshop Blood Red paint to highlight the blood, and all the painting was done by Mike.

The small table we used belongs to Paul, whose house we used, we also used the things such as the stanley knife and the wine glass.

The garage had two lights, one at each end. The scene fades in with the back light on, and as the antagonist is taking off her gloves, the second light flashes on, representing lightning, which gave the shot a sinister feel. Click is drowned out by the piano overture.
